Hi!
Thank you for subscribing to my mailing list and showing interest in my life in Canada. It took me longer than expected to send out the first email because I have been very occupied with looking for accommodation in Toronto (not that successful) and finishing my first-ever LP (very successful). And, I am very happy to finally share my experiences of the first two weeks here with you now.
My flight from Berlin to Toronto was super smooth and comfortable. On the plane, I watched Emily the Criminal, a movie about an artist who gets involved in criminal activities due to financial struggles. I really enjoyed watching the movie because of its unique main character, played by Aubrey Plaza - but, hopefully, that's not me in a few months.
For the last two weeks, I stayed in a cozy basement apartment located in Corso Italia-Davenport. I enjoyed taking random walks in the residential streets of this multicultural, down-to-earth neighborhood, where I stumbled upon cute, beautiful, and sometimes odd houses.
I also explored Downtown and PATH, Toronto's underground pedestrian walkway network, which was especially fascinating at night. I walked through empty and brightly lit food courts with no one around and found myself in deserted lobbies of fancy bank buildings. Liminal spaces have always been a great inspiration for my music, so walking around PATH and Downtown at night was one of my favorite things, if not the most favorite thing I have done here so far.
Although I could spend days wandering aimlessly through this city, I spent most of my time searching for accommodation, enjoying the NBA playoffs (a luxury without the time difference), and putting the final touches on my very first LP.
I have created over 50 song drafts (56 to be precise) since finishing my EP Shiny Object Syndrome and being laid off from my job at the end of last year. After my recent move to Canada, I decided it was the perfect time to turn this collection into a proper output. So, over the last two weeks, I selected, mixed, and mastered the best songs to release as an album, which I fittingly named Out Of Office.
I am thrilled to announce that Out Of Office will be released on Sunday, May 26th. The album's first single, No Goodbye, will be available on all major streaming services starting Sunday, May 12th. As a special treat, you can exclusively listen to another song from the album called Enjoy Your Day Or Night by clicking on the link below:
While the album production has been going great, the housing search has proven to be quite challenging. I was aware of the housing crisis in Toronto before moving here, but I did not let it discourage me. I wanted to see the situation for myself. And, my conclusion is, it is indeed difficult.
Housing in the area is quite expensive, and most of the available rental rooms are not aesthetically pleasing, to put it nicely. On top of that, there are very few rooms available at the moment, and the two I visited were both unacceptable.
The first room I saw was in the basement of a house owned by a man in his 60s. He had ridiculous house rules, such as only allowing one shower per day. He also told me about his love for Bangkok and how he had gone there every year since his divorce - I wonder what he's doing there. The second room was in a beautiful red wooden house. Unfortunately, the inside was in a desolate state with litter everywhere. The toilet looked like it had not been cleaned for months, and overall it had the vibe of a house you would see in one of my all-time favorite comfort TV shows, National Geographic's Drugs, Inc. Both not really places I'd like to call home.
Due to the challenging housing situation in Toronto, I spontaneously decided to travel to Montreal (I’m on the train to Montreal as I'm typing this). Although I enjoyed my time in Toronto and can picture myself living there, I’m not sure if it makes sense for me to live there considering the housing situation. I've heard a lot of good things about Montreal, especially about its vibrant music scene, so I'm excited to stay there for at least the next two weeks, explore the city, and see what it has in store for me.
Finally, since a picture is worth a thousand words, I will leave you with some photos of my past two weeks in Toronto.
Until then,
Soda Paapi
